WARDOGS Mortar Guide — Build, Fire, Relocate

Season 1 Early Access · ranges and damage are build-sensitive

The mortar is WARDOGS' indirect-fire answer to dug-in positions, tower defenses and FOB construction — and it's a team weapon, not a solo toy. Run correctly, a two-player mortar crew shuts down an approach lane. Run alone, it's a very expensive way to hit nothing.

The Mortar Mission Workflow

  1. Pick the emplacement first. Cover for the crew, access to ammunition supply, and room to leave when the shells start coming back. If the position has two of those three, keep looking.
  2. Confirm the target with an observer. Before loading anything, a spotter confirms the target and where friendlies are. Mortar fire near your own push is how teams lose matches and get muted.
  3. Set the initial solution in the live interface. Use the current build's controls — do not copy range tables from old videos; values have changed between builds.
  4. Fire one controlled shot, then correct one variable at a time. Range or azimuth — never both. A clear correction beats a fast double-guess every time.
  5. Stop or relocate when the picture changes. Target moved, friendlies entered the area, counterfire inbound — all three are signals to move, not to squeeze one more round.

Emplacement Rules of Thumb

Working With a Spotter

The observer calls corrections in small, unambiguous increments: "add 50, left 10" beats "you're short and kind of right of it." Agree on calls before the first shot, and keep friendly positions marked constantly — the spotter's second job is making sure the crew doesn't shell their own push. If your squad doesn't have a willing spotter, take binoculars yourself and self-spot your first ranging shots from a safe angle before committing to sustained fire.

Counterplay — When Someone Else Has the Mortar

  1. Move. Standing firefights are mortar food; break contact or push inside the shell's minimum range.
  2. Listen for the tube. Sustained indirect fire from one bearing narrows the search area — send a flank element, or answer with your own tube.
  3. Hard cover beats distance. A roof and four walls change the math more than 100 extra meters do.

FAQ

How do you build the mortar?
It's purchased like any specialist equipment and placed by the crew — exact placement rules and costs are build-sensitive, so check the current vendor UI. The workflow above is what doesn't change.
Does the mortar need a spotter?
Practically yes. Without corrections you're guessing; with them, you own the lane.
Are old range tables still valid?
No. Range behavior changed between builds during testing — always re-derive from a controlled first shot in the live client.
Mortar or artillery vehicle?
The vehicle-mounted platforms bring mobility and protection at much higher cost — see vehicles. The dismounted mortar is the cheap, sneaky version.
