WARDOGS Best Sniper Guide — SV98, MK22 & the AP vs FMJ Rule

Season 1 Early Access (build 0.11) · ballistics from the community damage database + r/WarDogs headshot tests, September 2026

Short answer: the SV98 loaded with 7.62x54 AP is the headshot tool — the round keeps one-tapping Level 3 helmets out past 500 m, and the same ammo pool feeds the S-tier SVD later. .308 FMJ is the fallback for lobbies that aren't wearing plates yet, and it wins slightly on bare heads. Full math below.

The Rifle Board

Five bolt guns and two semi-auto DMRs share the long-range game. Prices are Steam-store verified where marked; SV98's number is community-reported and the rest aren't published reliably yet, so we leave them out rather than guess.

The FMJ vs AP Headshot Rule (Community-Tested)

This is the rule r/WarDogs headshot threads have converged on, and it answers the classic "AP 762x54 or .308 FMJ?" question directly:

Why AP matters only against helmets: armour blocks damage where it covers — 30/40/55/65% for Levels 1–4 — and a helmet is the only thing between your shot and their head. On bare heads both calibres work; .308 just hits marginally harder per shot (60 vs 55 base damage, 840–894 vs 800–865 m/s muzzle velocity). So the lobby decides the loadout: FMJ for cheap heads, AP when Level 3 plates show up.

Ammo Economy — Why the SV98 Wins Long-Term

Calibres are shared pools, and that's the quiet argument for the SV98: 7.62x54R feeds the SV98, the SVD and the Mosin — every AP round you stock for the bolt gun survives into the S-tier SVD, the two-shot DMR that dominates the mid-game TTK tables. The .308 pool (MK22, BMR-308, FAL) is just as real but its DMR sits in the same S tier at a higher price. Buy the rifle whose ammo you'll still be shooting two unlocks from now.

Season 2 Warning

Season 2 lands October 15, 2026 with an economy rework, and ballistics or trader unlocks can move with it. This page gets re-verified on patch day — if the helmet rules change, so does the verdict above (see release dates).

FAQ

What's the best sniper in WARDOGS right now?
The SV98 with 7.62x54 AP for headshots; the MK22 if you want raw damage and already run .308. Both bolt guns one-tap under the same helmet rules.
Should I use 7.62 AP or .308 FMJ?
For headshots against armoured lobbies, AP — FMJ stops one-tapping at Level 3 helmets. Against bare heads, .308 FMJ's extra 5 base damage wins.
Where can I test snipers before buying?
The firing range lets you fire every weapon free before spending match cash — the same sandbox used to rehearse FOB builds in the FOB guide.
Why won't my FMJ one-tap Level 3 helmets?
That's the armour rule, not a bug: helmets block 55% at Level 3 and FMJ doesn't cut through it. AP does — until then, aim for the bare head or bring AP.
